    A recent article in The Philadelphia Inquirer explored the legacy of the 70-plus Rite Aid pharmacies that have closed in the Philadelphia region since 2022. While these store closures are problematic because many of them sit vacant for months afterward, a bigger issue remains with those stores that are open: their Plexiglass locked shelves.

    The newest batch of Census data is out — a five-year look back on the state of America through the lenses of housing, income, fertility, and more. It is chock-full of data, which you can cut up into random sound bites, like the median age of Americans is 38.7 years old, Syracuse leads the country in child poverty, fewer grandparents are raising children, perhaps due to a decline in opioid-related deaths, and other stats. I am likely going to dive into this data and create future posts from it.

    The other day, a friend from out of town asked me what I thought of Mayor Cherelle Parker’s first year. I struggled to think of anecdotes beyond street cleaning, the Kensington community revival plan, a proposed stadium deal, and a lower homicide rate. Had I missed something, or was that really all to remember from Parker’s first year in office — a year so hotly anticipated after years of underwhelming mayoral leadership from Jim Kenney?
