Sometimes the guilt I still carry from my divorce hits me on a random Sunday morning when the house is empty and quiet. There have been many times when my eyes have teared up in the grocery store while watching another couple. And of course I’ll have pangs of longing during the holidays. It’s been years – eight to be exact – since my ex-husband and I decided to go our separate ways and I still carry so much guilt. At the time, it was what we both wanted, what we both thought was best.

It’s been eight years since I got divorced. In that time, I’ve heard a lot of dating advice. Most of it – whether from a podcast, a meme or even a trusted friend who is also new to the dating pool again – pertained to women being the drivers of the relationship from beginning to end: how, since I last dated, women have started asking men out, paying for dates and generally just tell men what to do. None of it sat right with me no matter where it came from.

A few years ago, a friend of mine was going through a really hard time. She was a single mother with two young kids and was struggling financially. Then, she went through a bad breakup with her boyfriend. There were mornings when she’d call me before six crying. She had a hard time keeping her mind off things, and couldn’t stand down time. She had to be constantly busy, and would call me constantly, even if I didn’t pick up. It got to be too much and I told her I needed space from the friendship.

When my ex and I separated 10 years ago, we were very clear about one thing: our kids would come first. They’d come before our feelings about each other, new partners, and any hurt, sadness, or mourning we had. It was important that our kidsdidn’t get caught in the crossfire of our divorce. I’m proud of us as parents; we’ve done a good job with all three of our kids. Not a perfect one, but a damn good one.

I admit it, I’m a neat freak. Messes give me anxiety. I like my house to look nice. I prefer for everything to be in its place and put away. And when my kids were younger, it went beyond making them clean up their own messes. I wanted their bedrooms to be decorated and kept a certain way. That meant I picked out their bedding — vetoing the John Deere set that my son really wanted for his first bed — and made sure everything was organized and matching.

Not that long ago, my son really needed me. Some days, he needed me for more than I could give. But suddenly, those days are distant memories. As much as I thought I’d enjoy free time back then — along with extra headspace and not feeling touched out every day — the transition is harder than I thought. My oldest is now a grown man, and there’s very little he needs from me. That’s the goal, right? To raise independent kids who can make it on their own.

It’s hard to make friends later in life, but I’d made a great one in my 40s after a mutual friend connected us. We had a lot in common — both divorced and dedicated to our fitness and career goals. The first time we met, we bonded instantly and became close, fast friends. For two years, we talked weekly and made a lot of time to spend together, which isn’t easy when you’re a single mom and live 45 minutes away from each other. We meant a lot to each other.

I never let my kids look at photo albums from when I was in high school or college when they were young. There are pictures of me dancing in short dresses, a glass (sometimes two) of wine in my hands. There are a few of me with a cigarette holder. It was kind of a joke, because I used to smoke those long skinny cigarettes. I loved that cigarette holder because it made me feel like Audrey Hepburn. It was the 90s, and I probably wasn’t doing anything worse than any other kids my age.
