Just because our country is reversing its efforts to address climate change doesn’t mean the problem is going away. Quite the contrary, as everybody is consumed with worry about a tariff war wrecking the world economy and neighbors being abducted and deported without due process to hellholes in El Salvador, the rise in the Earth’s temperatures is accelerating, hitting historic highs while glaciers are rapidly receding. Mother Nature bats last, after all, regardless of your political affiliation.

When Elon Musk donned a cheesehead and started throwing money at voters in Wisconsin, it was a test. Would those vaunted blue-collar Midwest values hold or were they for sale to the highest bidder, a guy who brought us Big Balls, DOGE and Cybertrucks with their side panels falling off as they sped along the country’s highways. It wasn’t even close.

In a scene from one of my favorite new TV series, “The Pitt,” a young doctor in training works feverishly to save a man’s life. He continues chest compressions as the more experienced nurses and doctors nearby watch the patient’s vitals deteriorate. The young man keeps pumping, sweat beading on his forehead, desperation building as he tries to will the man’s heart to beat. After a Herculean effort, he is ordered to stop. Time of death is recorded.

In this frenzied era of moving fast and breaking things, it’s hard to tell which is worse: the cynical intended consequences of reckless policies or the clueless unintended ones. One thing’s for sure, though, either way they leave colossal messes to clean up. In one example that looked like a scene straight out of “Dr. Strangelove,” we have the story of some 350 civil servants at the National Nuclear Security Administration being fired last month.
