Two truce talks involving Donald Trump have failed in recent days. Vladimir Putin snubbed Trump’s push for a full 30-day ceasefire even after Ukraine agreed. Instead, Putin offered to refrain from striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days, then broke the truce hours later. In Gaza, the US talked with Hamas about a truce and a hostage exchange. Those deals fell apart, so Israel launched air strikes against Hamas in Gaza, and the US launched strikes against Iran’s Houthis in Yemen.

The priority is dealing with this made-in-America crisis, but the biggest issue is Canada’s democracy itself. What kind of democracy is Canada with 40 million people whose new prime minister has not been elected but been chosen by 86 per cent (129,000) of only 156,000 or so Liberals who voted in its leadership contest? This only happened because Justin Trudeau quit and was allowed to prorogue parliament, thanks to the permission granted by his appointee, the Governor General.
