When it comes to big time mergers and acquisitions, Hollywood of late has been in a state of suspended animation following union strikes and fires, and amidst the uncertainty around how President Trump’s policies may impact the markets. Still, some companies have been able to fly under the radar to expand by snapping up players working outside of traditional Hollywood’s bailiwick of streaming, linear TV and theatrical film, say experts.

Late last year, entertainment industry tracker NRG (National Research Group) released a study concluding that 43 percent of young men aged 13-30 don’t know what it means to be a man in today’s society. “Like Ken in the ‘Barbie’ movie, men are struggling to figure out their own place,” the study says, referring to the hit movie’s multicultural troupe of “just Kens” who are baffled by the increasing power of women. The report also suggests Hollywood may be remiss in not filling the void.

In June 2014, Miramax Film Corp. and the Saul Zaentz Company settled a $20-million lawsuit over profit sharing on Zaentz’s 1996 Best Picture winner “The English Patient.” The celebrated film earned $232 million at the box office and a reported $75 million in video sales. Zaentz claimed Miramax, then owned by Disney, had padded expenses to reduce the profits — thus reducing Zaentz’s percentage payout.
