What is already known? Youth with type 1 diabetes are more likely to be hospitalised compared to those without diabetes. What has this study found? Youth aged under 20 years with type 1 diabetes had an increased risk of hospitalisation for almost all diagnoses compared to the general population. Over 60% of hospitalisations in youth with type 1 diabetes were directly related to diabetes; almost half of these were for ketoacidosis.

The increasing incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children and young people in the USA will result in an expanding population of young adults at risk of developing early complications of diabetes whose health-care needs will exceed those of their peers. Findings regarding age and season of diagnosis will inform focused prevention efforts.
