AbstractNickel-rich layered transition metal oxides are leading cathode candidates for lithium-ion batteries due to their increased capacity, low cost and enhanced environmental sustainability compared to cobalt formulations. However, the nickel enrichment comes with larger volume change during cycling as well as reduced oxygen stability, which can both incur performance degradation.

Electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen production requires high operating voltages (>1.23 V) and electricity cost, encumbering its large-scale applications. The development of more high-efficiency systems and sufficiently effective catalysts for hydrogen production is of great significance but challenging. Here, we innovatively construct high-entropy alloy nanoclusters (HEANCs) with full-active sites and super-active sites for hydrazine oxidation-assisted electrolytic hydrogen production.
