I woke up this morning to the sound of seagulls flying over the Atlantic Ocean, as my all-new Silversea cruise ship made its way from Lisbon to Vigo. I didn’t realise just how soundly I would sleep, or how gently the breeze would waft into my cabin all night; how poetically the sheer white curtains would flutter; how slowly the scenery would change. It feels restful, calming and restoring – not what I expected today, and especially not on a cruise ship.

My favourite part of a villa holiday is waking up – and watching how everyone else wakes up. I’m an early riser, but I relish solitude in the mornings, so I lie in the crisp white sheets for a couple of hours, enjoying the view with coffee, reading the news and then a glossy magazine (admittedly, often this one). I never draw the curtains shut, so I can wake up with the sun.

What makes a hotel a Gold List hotel? It’s when you check in after a long journey and your suitcases arrive in your room before you do. When the sunshine floods through the windows in the morning, but can be blacked out if you need to sleep in. When there’s a complimentary chauffeur-driven car to drop you anywhere within a mile’s radius. When the lift operator knows your name, and remembers your dress from the night before (and reminds you to order the pancakes on Sunday).
