Not many artists have found their way forward during an earthquake. Lorna Simpson, whose pioneering conceptual photographs and multimedia work over more than three decades had already established her as a major voice for Black feminist art, was in a residency program in Sonoma, California, on August 24, 2014, when the area was hit by a 6.0 tremor that killed two people and injured 300 others. “It made me a bit fearless,” she tells me.

Anna Weyant has come a long way in a short time. Even before her debut show at the New York gallery 56 Henry in 2019, there was a waiting list for her work—strange images of young girls whose inner lives seem potentially disturbing, painted in the style of the Dutch Masters, and of the current master John Currin. She was 24 when that first show opened, full of blond innocence and extremely shy.

Annabelle Selldorf, the architect of the Frick Collection’s renovation and expansion, is leading me on a hard-hat tour of the site on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a few months ahead of the reopening. We are standing inside the beloved Beaux Arts building, on scaffolding inside a large, curving oval space that will be the new auditorium—something the old Frick never had. For some reason, I have a sense of enveloping pleasure and purity, as though I’m inside an egg.

It’s not every day that two artists who are married to each other have simultaneous solo shows at the same museum—and remain on speaking terms. This summer, Samantha (Sam) Moyer and Eddie Martinez will both mount shows at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, Long Island. It helps that their work is very different, although related in its combination of abstract and figurative elements.
