The Kansas City Chiefs began the 2024 NFL season as an obvious Super Bowl favourite at FanDuel. With Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, a roster stacked with talent, and an elite coaching staff, the two-time defending champions seemed destined for a three-peat. At the time, I predicted Kansas City and the Philadelphia Eagles would represent their respective conferences in the Super Bowl.

Here’s the thing about football: it’s a team sport. You win together. You lose together. All for one, one for all. You get it. But occasionally, a pair of superstars step up and steal the show with a performance that makes everyone watching the game recognize immediately that there’s no way their team would win the game without them. I’m struggling to decide if Thursday was a step forward or a missed opportunity. I walked away from Thursday’s NFL games as a winner, but it’s hard to ignore the near misses that led to another big day narrowly slipping just out of reach. The Detroit Lions are the Super Bowl favourite at FanDuel. At 10-1, the Lions are tied with the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs for the best record in the NFL this season. Kansas City’s point differential is +52. Detroit’s point differential is +177 – 71 points clear of the Buffalo Bills for the best mark in the NFL. The Lions have also been the most profitable team to bet against the spread this season.

There was a moment on Monday Night Football when it looked like the Kansas City Chiefs might finally stumble. Fortunately for all of us who bet the Chiefs, that concern faded quickly as Patrick Mahomes and company brushed off a slow start and ultimately took care of business in an impressive 30-24 overtime victory. Once again, Mahomes was at his absolute best when the game was on the line. The three-time Super Bowl champion went 34-of-44 for 291 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
