    “I’m a maker. It’s something I was born with,” Patchi Cancado says. A passion was ignited during those rides, inspiring her to embrace design and, one day, integrate it into her life. Cancado moved from Brazil to Virginia to study at Old Dominion University in the early 2000s.

The structure has no identifier except the intermittent sounds of heavy metal music and crunching machinery. The anonymous exterior belies the facility’s true function: It is the laboratory and lair of the costumed art collective slash alien metal band GWAR.
