Mexico Public Schools board will have a new face joining an incumbent as voters elected two people in the April 8 election. In the Mexico City Council, just one person, Ron Ray, was on the ballot, and he took home 645 votes to win a seat that was vacated by Chris Williams. Voters in Audrain County went to the polls April 8 to decide seats on boards and councils along with other issues.

It’s a job perk that Mexico Public Schools transportation department representatives tout as they seek more bus drivers for the department.

Homelessness is not just a problem of big cities - it can affect small towns and cities. Mexico is no exception. Ra’Vae Moore, executive director of the Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition, spoke about the homeless issue at the March 21 Mexico Rotary Club meeting and in a Ledger interview, detailing how transitional housing strives to give people a hand-up, not a handout, in their lives.

Lots of employers offering jobs that are considered a calling - teaching or law enforcement, for example - struggle to find people to fill slots these days. Mexico Public Safety Department is no different, as it has some openings now. MPSD Chief Brice Mesko gave a recap of the 2024 annual report for his department at the March 24 Mexico City Council meeting. The report detailed data on everything from incidents to traffic stops to personnel and fleet numbers.

A financial incentive to attract teachers was approved by the Mexico Public Schools Board of Education at its March 18 meeting. The board approved a $2,000 stipend for students who complete their student teaching within the district. Amber Henderson, director of human resources, said the idea grew out of retention and recruitment efforts. “As we know, everybody in the state - everybody in the nation - is having trouble hiring teachers,” she said.

Senior citizens may begin applying on April 1 to file for a tax credit at the Audrain County Collector’s Office. The Audrain County Commission passed an ordinance on March 13 that provides a process for residents who are 62 years of age or older in their primary residence to qualify for a tax credit. The commissioners' action comes in response to the Missouri legislature passing Senate Bill 190 in 2023 and Senate Bill 756 in 2024.

We’ve all heard that automated voice before when we call a business or creditor to seek some information. “I’m sorry, I didn’t get that” comes the reply when the system doesn’t comprehend a human response. It’s among the contemporary issues consumers have when they need to connect with a business and that business prefers not to let a caller interact with a human. It’s becoming more common to correspond with a machine over the phone or a chatbot online.

By Don MunschEditorA former Mexico Public Schools teacher turned herself in March 20 for a warrant that charges her with two counts of sexual contact with a student. Janae Marie Nunnelly of Mexico taught at Eugene Field Elementary School. Her employment was severed by the school district on Feb. 28, when the board voted to terminate her teaching contract. She is being held at Audrain County Jail, and her bond is set at $250,000.
