An 18-year-old man who pleaded no contest to trying to kidnap two women told authorities the incidents were just pranks, California prosecutors reported. Charges in a third related incident were dropped, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release sent to McClatchy News. Royhil Kumar Lakhan of East San Mateo will be sentenced July 8, prosecutors said. His defense attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.

A 3.2-magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Malibu shook the Los Angeles area, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The 8-mile deep quake hit 3 miles from Malibu Beach at 9:33 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, according to the USGS. More than 85 people from as far away as Altadena and Pasadena reported feeling the tremor to the agency as of 10 a.m. PT. “I knew I felt something,” read one post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Was that a small earthquake?” read another post.

One of two swimmers who struggled in the ocean after jumping off a Santa Cruz cliff remains missing, California firefighters reported. The second swimmer made it back to shore in the incident at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday, May 4, the Santa Cruz Fire Department said in a May 5 news release. Onlookers saw the two jump off a cliff into the ocean, then begin to struggle swimming back to shore, firefighters said. The second person may have gone underwater.
