TikTok was in federal court last month arguing against a law that U.S. President Biden signed in April giving TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, 90 days to sell the app to a non-Chinese company or be banned nationwide. The deadline is January 19, 2025, a Sunday. “After several hours of questioning, however,” NPR reported, “it was difficult to gauge which way the court is leaning in the high-stakes legal saga that is the most dire-yet challenge TikTok has faced.”What’s next?

“Aha – I knew it! Told ya so.” That, in so many words, is the reaction from some people I’m seeing in social media, as well of course as in Chinese officialdom, to the November 18th report that Michael Spavor is seeking a multimillion dollar settlement from the government of Canada. (He has not, to the best of my knowledge, filed a lawsuit.) According to the report, he is “alleging he was detained because he unwittingly provided intelligence on North Korea to Canada and allied spy services.

I just heard from a friend about the Ting Ye case (reported here and here). Ye, a 26-year-old Chinese national, was driving at speeds estimated to be around 90 to 100 mph in the early morning hours when she crashed. First responders were not called to the scene until about 45 minutes later when people noticed the crash (remember it occurred around 3:45 a.m.). Ye was sent to the hospital but her fellow passenger, a 27-year-old male with a Chinese name, was apparently already dead.
