Derry City and Strabane District Council are urging the public to act responsibly if they are purchasing an e-bike or e-scooter this Christmas. The warning comes as there has been an influx of fires caused by lithium batteries, with 10 proving fatal in the UK in the last four years. Those purchasing an e bike or scooter should ensure the vehicle has UKCA or CE markers, meaning it is in-line with product safety regulations.

Met Eireann’s issued a weather advisory for colder weather next week. It says there will be significantly colder conditions from Monday, which will last through much of the week. Frost and ice are likely, while there is the potential for sleet, snow and hail for some. Showers will be most widespread in the north, and parts of the west. The advisory has been issued due to the unusually mild start to November.

Around 850 are diagnosed with cancer in Donegal every year. While last year, 420 in the county died from the illness. The Irish Cancer Society are calling on the next government to fully fund the National Cancer Strategy. It’s been found that cancer care will be a key issue for voters in the upcoming election, as 2 in 5 people in in Connacht and Ulster put off going to the GP or hospital because of financial barriers.

Ireland will be the first European country to raise the age to legally buy tobacco products to 21. It will take effect from 2028, after it was signed into law by the President. Anyone caught selling cigarettes to under 21 year-olds could face a one thousand euro fine, or six months in prison.

Second-level teachers in Donegal will join a nationwide protest on Tuesday, to express their concerns over changes to the Senior Cycle. Teachers will hold a lunchtime protest outside their schools to highlight their belief that the changes will undermine standards and threaten fairness and quality for Leaving Cert students. The protest, organised by the ASTI and TUI, calls for a postponement of the implementation of the Senior Cycle redevelopment programme.
