FPCS moves forward with Fort Payne Career Academy

Testimony began Tuesday (March 4) at the DeKalb County Courthouse as a Grove Oak man stands accused of murder, claiming that he shot a neighbor in self-defense and/or the defense of others. The state and the defense agree that on May 8, 2023, at about 2 a.m., Gregory Mark Bagwell went to Keith Duane Sullivan’s home in the Grove Oak community. The encounter ended with Sullivan – a church music director, and a teacher of piano and guitar -- shooting Bagwell outside his home.

On Tuesday, Fort Payne City Council approved installing a fence along the wall at the sports complex parking lot, as recommending by the city’s insurance company. The company recommended putting no parking signs along Valley Head Road as well, to lessen the city’s liability exposure. City Clerk Andy Parker said a loss control representative visited recently, to make recommendations on what they city can do to lessen liability and keep insurance costs down.

Fort Payne Mayor Brian Baine talked about the accomplishments, set backs, and plans for the future in his 2024 State of the City address Thursday at Fort Payne City Auditorium, hosted by Farmers Telecommunications and the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce. He took time to praise the city’s department heads and employees and counted improvements for them as one of the administration’s accomplishments.

People were excited to see Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey in Fort Payne Monday morning, but the star of the show at the BEAT Center ribbon cutting on the campus of Fort Payne High School was the center itself and the programs it will offer for Fort Payne students. “I don’t think we’ve seen this much excitement here at the high school since Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry and Alabama kicked off their first June Jam back in 1982,” Ivey said, adding that in this center, the city has something as big to celebrate.

Students from across DeKalb County and beyond will take the stage in "The Lion King Jr." next month, and tickets are on sale now. The musical, based on the Broadway hit, which was based on the Disney movie, "The Lion King," is the spring performance from the DeKalb Fine Arts Theatre – a program that involves students from across the county school system and other systems as well.

Fort Payne City Schools’ Little Ridge Intermediate School played host to the regional staff of the Alabama Reading Initiative Wednesday – bringing together literacy specialists for training toward their ARI’s goal of supporting reading teachers in the classroom so they can better serve their students. Alabama Reading Initiative Director Bonnie Short said the training session was designed to bring student-centered coaching to the regional staff through a lab scenario at Little Ridge.

The DeKalb County Commission heard from residents voicing their concerns about a proposed 10-year plan that would double the amount of garbage accepted daily at Sand Valley Landfill in the Peek’s Corner-Collinsville area. The message four people who spoke to the commission Tuesday conveyed boiled down to this: The commission should raise tipping fees on the tons of garbage dumped now instead of bringing more garbage into DeKalb County.
DeKalb BOE hears energy savings update

During the work session prior to the DeKalb County Board of Education’s January meeting, representatives from Snyder Electric gave an update on the results so far of the company’s contract, aimed at saving the school district money on energy costs. The goal of the agreement with Snyder was a 29% reduction in energy usage and a guaranteed$27.3 million savings for the school system over a 20-year period.
