Testimony began Tuesday (March 4) at the DeKalb County Courthouse as a Grove Oak man stands accused of murder, claiming that he shot a neighbor in self-defense and/or the defense of others. The state and the defense agree that on May 8, 2023, at about 2 a.m., Gregory Mark Bagwell went to Keith Duane Sullivan’s home in the Grove Oak community. The encounter ended with Sullivan – a church music director, and a teacher of piano and guitar -- shooting Bagwell outside his home.

On Tuesday, Fort Payne City Council approved installing a fence along the wall at the sports complex parking lot, as recommending by the city’s insurance company. The company recommended putting no parking signs along Valley Head Road as well, to lessen the city’s liability exposure. City Clerk Andy Parker said a loss control representative visited recently, to make recommendations on what they city can do to lessen liability and keep insurance costs down.

Fort Payne Mayor Brian Baine talked about the accomplishments, set backs, and plans for the future in his 2024 State of the City address Thursday at Fort Payne City Auditorium, hosted by Farmers Telecommunications and the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce. He took time to praise the city’s department heads and employees and counted improvements for them as one of the administration’s accomplishments.
