If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em on a multi-day, drunk-driving road trip in middle-class middle of America to find their missing father with a garbage goth girl named Yivi whom they met two weeks ago in an Airbnb basement. That seems to be the mantra for “Make Sure You Die Screaming,” Zee Carlstrom’s debut novel from Flatiron Books. The first-person narration follows no-name Gunderson, nonbinary queer person, at what surely must be their rock-bottom.

The modern fairy tale is a tricky thing, what with phones and cities and all the trappings of now that tend to suck the magic out of a story and make it impossible to suspend disbelief. Sometimes reading poetry can feel exhilarating, like you are finally seeing and being seen. Other times it’s a slog that leaves you desperate for a nap to process what you just read. Patrycja Humienik’s debut poetry collection, “We Contain Landscapes,” is a healthy mix of both. A self-described queer immigrant, Humienik considers questions of chronic illness and inheritance, of a daughter’s duty and an immigrant’s place in the world.

“The Close-Up” checks many boxes: steamy, suspenseful, surprising, meta. But it’s author Pip Drysdale’s momentous writing and underlying musings on legacy and love that really drive the novel home. Read my @APEntertainment review: https://t.co/zWVGqPxt3g

IT'S DONE AND IT'S HERE This project involved 2 spreadsheets, a doc, probably over 100 emails, and countless hours of reading (I basically doubled my read books for the year). Take a gander at my AMAZING gift guide for young readers (and young at ♥️) https://t.co/j9cLdrx2et
