Middle school students in Pittsburgh’s Greater Hazelwood neighborhood are getting hands-on with biotechnology thanks to a partnership between Pitt’s Office of Engagement and Community Affairs (ECA) and the Smithsonian Science Education Center. This collaboration brings the Smithsonian Biotechnology Curriculum to Greater Hazelwood, providing students with engaging activities that highlight real-world applications of life sciences education.

Katie Currie, a senior studying finance and supply chain management in Pitt’s College of Business Administration, won big on “Wheel of Fortune” during the game show’s 50th anniversary week. She appeared on the episode with her identical twin, Christina, a senior at the University of Richmond. The sisters are from Severna Park, Maryland. The twins kicked off the game strong, winning $12,100 in an early puzzle and trips to Portugal and Hawaii in subsequent rounds.

An inaugural Sips of Science on Nov. 12 event brought together community members and University of Pittsburgh experts for discussions about groundbreaking research at Trace Brewing in the city’s Bloomfield neighborhood. Inspired by Pitt Professor Marlene Behrmann and her prior outreach efforts, the event was the result of a collaboration with the Eye and Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh and multiple departments in the School of Medicine.
