Kamala Harris’s loss this week to Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election, had me thinking about sexism, race and the issue of character. It’s now clear that the cost of living, crime and border/immigration anxieties soured voters on the Democratic party, Biden and Harris. She carried that baggage to a humiliating defeat.

Recently, the Star reported on a dispute over bike lanes in Etobicoke. A complaint about an online headline for the story, one we ended up changing, led me to think about how my view of cyclists and bike paths has been influenced over the years by the news — and by my personal experiences. For me, the tensions first started to come into view while I was a reporter in the Star’s city hall bureau.

To mark this week’s anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in Israel, the Star ran what I thought was a courageous, thoughtful, in depth and compelling feature exploring how that assault and subsequent war have impacted Torontonians. I was drawn in and moved by the photographs and perspectives of the people the five Toronto Star reporters interviewed for the article — those quoted were men and women, Jews, Muslims and one of neither faith.
