1 IntroductionSynthetic vascular grafts are widely used in clinical practice for vascular and cardiac surgery for over 50 years (Leon and Greisler, 2003). One of their most successful applications is the replacement of the thoracic and abdominal aorta and, more recently, the aortic root, either by open surgery or by endovascular repair.
