The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has commended the Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Da-costa Aboagye, and his team for their unwavering commitment towards prompt payment of claims. Describing recent payments by the NHIA as unprecedented, the Association said the drive has brought great relief to service providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

DISCUSSANTS at a workshop on development have identified long-term structural reforms as key to effective planning of the country. At a technical consultation session on national development in Accra yesterday, the participants also affirmed the position of a technical paper on a proposed compact to make long-term development plans that will be binding on governments.

The country has not recorded any case of cholera since 2020, after one case of the disease was recorded in 2019, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has said. The progress has been attributed to factors, including improved access to potable water and lavatories, public adherence to hand washing with soap under running water and strict surveillance by the GHS.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has reviewed upwards the prices of medicines and services paid to providers and suppliers on the health insurance scheme, with effect from yesterday. It has also reviewed the list of medicines on the scheme to include, Artemether Injection 50mg/ml, which is widely used for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria (Plasmodium falciparum), and Levofloxacin Infusion, a drug used to treat bacterial infections in different parts of the body.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended Ghana for eliminating sleeping sickness, one of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The elimination of the disease, also known as Human African Trypanosomiasis, brings to three the number of NTDs eliminated in the country. The other two are Guinea worm, which was eliminated in 2015, and trachoma, eliminated in 2018.
