Published 11:11 am Wednesday, April 23, 2025 A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family of a Crowley teenager following a tragic drowning in the Calcasieu River, just west of Oberlin on Good Friday. Eighteen-year-old Markell Lazard’s body was recovered from the river around 9 a.m. Monday following a nearly four-day search. Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert III said Tuesday that foul play is not suspected, though a police investigation is ongoing.

Published 1:28 pm Monday, April 21, 2025 The American Veterans Traveling Tribute, a replica of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will be visiting Allen Parish this fall, just in time for Veterans Day. The exhibit will be on display Nov. 3-7 next to the Inn at Coushatta, off U.S. 165 and Hickory Flat Road in Kinder. The memorial will be open 24 hours a day and will be free to the public.

Published 10:59 am Monday, April 21, 2025 The body of a Crowley man who drowned Friday while swimming with family and friends in the Calcasieu River near Oberlin was recovered this morning. Markell Lazard, 18, was reported missing around 2 p.m. Friday after he was last seen swimming at the river beach area off La. 26, just west of Oberlin, according to Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert III.

All Allen Parish schools will be closed Wednesday, March 30 due to the high winds and severe weather threat especially the north end of the parish, according to Superintendent Kent Reed. Schools will reopen on Thursday.
