Legendary musher Rick Mackey passes away

Alaska lost another legendary musher Monday night with the passing of Iditarod and Yukon Quest champion Rick Mackey. Mackey, 71, of Nenana, died of cancer at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Mackey competed in his first Iditarod in 1975 and his last in 2004. Over the course of four decades Mackey ran the race 22 times, winning in 1983 and placing in the top 10 an additional 12 times.

It’s no secret that the Mat-Su Valley produces some of the highest-quality weed in the state. It’s also no secret that it has more than it’s fair share of cannabis stores. Even so, Houston Grass Station stands out. Located on a partially wooded area nestled between the Parks Highway and the Alaska Railroad, this large, red, two-story building — equipped with a Western-style false front and giant cutouts of Big Foot flanking its front door — is hard to miss.
