So it’s tariff time in the United States and if it’s prolonged, it will have a devastating effect on wine and spirit production and sales worldwide. Much of the wine and spirit production is orchestrated by major corporate producers with deep pockets. But in every wine region I have visited, there are always many smaller mom-and-pop operations, or self-funded folks who have cashed out of some business and followed a dream to create something.

I will often write a wine story to urge my readers to step outside their comfort zone and taste wines they rarely see and barely know, if they have been exposed to them at all. Abruzzo is something special to experience. Bounded by the Adriatic Sea to the east and the towering Apeninne Mountains to the west, it is largely isolated from other parts of Italy, with a culture, winemaking and lifestyle that have been largely self-reliant, agricultural, insular and family-centric. Probably by now most wine lovers have heard about the Coravin wine preservation system. I recently received one of their top systems as a gift and it has changed my wine world. Many quality restaurants use the Coravin to offer select high-end wines by the glass. The premium price for that glass will deter many from opting in so it might take a few days to some weeks to finish the bottle.

Iwas recently invited to a Uruguayan wine-tasting seminar in Manhattan where several winemakers or family representatives presented their wines and stories. Uruguay is a small country, shoe-horned between Brazil and Argentina and made up of largely Italian and Spanish immigrants. European families arrived and brought old-world winemaking experience and vines to begin creating their own wines for family and friends’ consumption. Old world their experience may have been.
