It’s time to visit another side of Germany. While huge crowds of tourists flock to Berlin, Cologne, Munich, and Heidelberg, there are some areas of the country—especially in the east—that don’t get the vast numbers of foreign tourists that hit the more popular spots. Saxony, an area about two hours south of Berlin along the Czech and Polish borders, has historically been one of the manufacturing and mining centers of Germany, but it’s also where so much German culture originated.

I visited Calgary this summer to see the Calgary Stampede, and it did not disappoint. The Stampede days are the busiest and most eventful 10 days in Calgary every year, drawing almost a million-and-a-half visitors from all over Canada, the United States, and the rest of the world, and it’s easy to see why they come. The city buzzes with excitement, not to mention one of North America’s biggest rodeos. It’s a sea of white hats and cowboy boots all over town.

We have a clear dearth of luxury rail journeys in the United States, but this new route from Rocky Mountaineer might change that. Sadly, the United States has nothing on the scale of Europe’s Venice-Simplon Orient Express, South Africa’s Blue Train, or India’s Maharajas Express, each a luxury rail trip where you sleep and dine aboard a veritable 5-star hotel on wheels. Instead, we have Amtrak.
