Political parties in Senegal are campaigning in a parliamentary race that will decide the extent to which the new President Bassirou Diomaye Faye will be able to implement his agenda. Campaigning officially kicked off on Sunday. President Faye's Pastef party is competing for a majority that would secure his mandate, but former ruling parties have formed a rival coalition, including the country's influential ex-presidents Macky Sall and Abdoulaye Wade.

The leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia met for a three-way summit in Asmara on Thursday against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Horn of Africa region. The French News Agency (AFP) reports that concern about security and stability in the volatile area have mounted since Ethiopia in January signed a controversial deal with the breakaway Somali region of Somaliland, giving it long-sought access to the sea.

Turkish contractor Metag Holding on Tuesday signed an agreement to expand the ancient Somali port of Hobyo, according to local media. Metag’s deal with the Hobyo Investment Company will see it run the port for 80 years. The Federal Government of Somalia says the aim is to turn the small settlement of 11,000 people into a regional trade hub. The deal would offer Ethiopia an alternative outlet to Djibouti, and de-congest the port of Mogadishu.
