DONALD Trump is returning to the White House and some of the more clueless people are asking the question: “What is Trump going to do in the next four years?” I say that’s clueless, because if there’s one thing we know about Trump it’s that he says what he thinks. Added to that, Trump isn’t like most politicians. When he says he’s going to do a thing, he actually does it. Much of the world couldn’t believe that would be the case in 2016. Last night’s Trovatore at the Met started out okay. But it got much better than that. By the end, it was a stirring Trovatore, deserving of many bravos. A more fitting word might be “venerable.” Michael Tilson Thomas and Emanuel Ax had just taken the stage. “mtt” (as he is widely known) is a conductor, born in 1944. Ax is a pianist, born in 1949. They were hotshots once. And they are among the most admired musicians in the business. They were present in David Geffen Hall to begin the New York Philharmonic’s 2024–25 season. The off-season was a little rocky.
