The leader of the Catholic Church had been in hospital for an extended period but seemed to be on the mend when he greeted Easter Sunday crowds in Rome yesterday. Sadly, Vatican authorities announced that he had succumbed to his illness at around 7.35am this morning.

Temperatures in New York are set to plummet today before a heat blast sends the mercury soaring 24 hours later. In some parts of the state, thermostats will only creep up to 55F on Monday, marking a distinctly chilly start to the week. The National Weather Service reports that the morning could be even cooler, with some areas languishing around the mid-30s before gently climbing higher later in the day.
