President-elect Donald Trump’s renewed desire to acquire Greenland, by force if necessary, has created much ado in Denmark, Greenland and NATO Europe. Both Denmark, which provides for Greenland’s defense, and Greenland’s political leadership oppose the idea of the island being ceded to the U.S. But an invasion of Greenland is not necessarily on the cards.

As President-elect Donald Trump and his team prepare to take office, a major debate is taking place regarding the degree to which the U.S. should maintain its nearly 80-year military presence in Europe. Many experts contend that the U.S. should focus primarily on deterring and, if necessary, defeating China in an East Asian conflict. The Europeans, they argue, should look after their own defenses, having sheltered for far too long under America’s defense umbrella.

When the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011, thousands of Syrian refugees began to flood into neighboring Jordan. By the end of the following year, the number of refugees had reached 150,000; a year later, it was one-half million. There are currently at least 1 million Syrian refugees in Jordan. A senior Jordanian military official told me shortly after the start of the Syrian uprising that most of the refugees were poor and uneducated, creating a major economic burden on his country.

President Joe Biden and his top negotiator, Amos Hochstein, deserve considerable credit for bringing about a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah. The terror group had no reason to launch a new conflict with Israel on Oct. 8, 2023, but clearly did so at Tehran’s behest. Indeed, when the Hamas leadership initially approached the late Hassan Nasrallah in an effort to get Hezbollah to agree to a coordinated attack on Israel, the Hezbollah leader demurred.
