    The Pasco County Commission elections are still about a year and a half away, but the field of candidates for the District 2 Seat on the board is already getting an official candidate. Democrat Stephanie Vazquez announced Friday that she is entering the race for the post currently held by Seth Weightman, a Republican who has not yet formally filed for candidacy to be reelected to the seat. He replaced Mike Moore in 2022 after Moore announced his retirement.

    Students from Wekiva High School in Apopka got high marks in a national competition for their knowledge and capabilities in restaurant management after the team fared well in a National Restaurant Association Education Foundation (NRAEF) event. The Apopka students placed fourth in the restaurant management competition called the National ProStart Invitational May 2 through 4 in Baltimore, Maryland.

    The St. Johns River Ferry mishap that led to the service being shut down for repairs for a few days has now extended into a closure that will stretch into Summer. The ferry vessel service, which extends State Road A1A in North Florida, ran into a boarding ramp Sunday and was shut down immediately. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) initially said it could take days to repair.

    South Florida home sales showed some signs of improvement in April, though the Miami-Dade County market is still struggling to gain momentum. Broward County in April had a slight year-over-year drop in closed single-family contracts, falling from 434 closed sales in 2024 to 425 last month, according to the Elliman Report. That’s a 2.1% year-to-year decline. But for Broward, that’s a big change compared to the March figures, when there were only 217 homes sold in the Fort Lauderdale area.

    New unemployment claims in Florida ticked up for the first time in nearly a month for the week ending May 3. A new U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) report showed the first increase in new unemployment claims in the state in three weeks. There were 6,227 initial unemployment claims for the week ending May 3. That was a modest increase of 385 claims from the week ending April 26, when there were 5,842 filings. It’s the first time Florida’s weekly unemployment claims have exceeded 6,000 in about a month.
