When Elon Musk changed Twitter to X, I vowed not to honor his chosen name. Now, nearly two years later, I’ve accepted that I was in denial. Twitter is gone. All that’s left is X. The internet is broken. This is abundantly clear to me not only as a queer person but as the editor for one of the few remaining online publications not owned by a media giant. While I finally stopped “tweeting” from my personal account last month, it hasn’t been an easy platform to abandon.

I got off a seven hour FaceTime call in May of 2021 with a plan. We’d been doing these weekly calls for two months now, and there was no denying it: We had a classic case of long-distance lesbian longing. Now it was time to meet in-person, time to discover if these feelings would be as strong outside a screen. I googled flights from Los Angeles to Toronto ready to spend what I needed. Out the Movies is a bi-weekly newsletter about queer film for AF+ subscribers written by Drew Burnett Gregory. This week’s topic: the recently launched Autostraddle Encyclopedia of Lesbian Cinema. Since making my way through every Best Picture winner and various director filmographies as a child, my cinephilia has been paired with a Capricon completionism.

Open, honest communication is a tenet of queer community. Or, at least, saying the phrase “open, honest communication” is a tenet of queer community. Henry Hanson’s new film Dog Movie is about this contradiction. Dog Movie is about t4t vegan couple Arrow (Marten Katze) and Haven (Jessi Gaston) who have been letting their friend Bloo (Milo Talwani) sleep on their couch for far too long. Bloo would be a nightmare housemate if they were contributing to the rent, but as a houseguest they’re even worse.

Earlier this week, I reviewed a new movie called Queens of Drama. It’s the first feature from Alexis Langlois, a nonbinary French filmmaker who made a name for themself with campy over the top shorts filled with dykes and trans women. I loved Queens of Drama, but in 2021 I watched one of their shorts with my eyes rolled so far back in my head they could see my imperfect brain.
