Local bands Pleasure Pill and Benches spent two weeks performing together on a tour that stretched from the Pacific Northwest to the mountain states before returning to southern California for a performance at Little Italy’s Music Box. The evening got off to a great start when I stumbled upon an open meter spot on Ash Street about five blocks east of the club. Reader, please cherish these days of free parking after 6 pm while you can: extended parking meter enforcement hours may be on the horizon.

There’s something undeniably wonderful about cooking outside – and it’s not just the food. It’s the sound of the birds, the smell of the trees and everything else nature has to offer. There’s also a certain amount of regality that a grill master achieves during a winning outing. You have fed the masses successfully and can bask in that accomplishment, as long as you didn’t have to literally put out a fire, of course.

New York City's They Might Be Giants (TMBG) rolled into town recently for a two-night stand at The Observatory in North Park. I caught the second night’s performance (May 14) which featured an (un-announced) heaping helping of songs from their 1992 album Apollo 18. But of course, before I got to the show, I had to dock my own vehicle in No Park.

From The Hooligans to the Hep-Tights Heath Cooley’s took his first stab at playing the drums when he was around 10 years old.
