The 56th annual Governor's Dinner is scheduled for July 15 at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City. Longtime Nevada football head coach and athletic director — and member of the College Football Hall of Fame — Chris Ault will headline one of Northern Nevada's premier summer events. Ault’s career at Nevada spanned six decades and included time as a player, coach and administrator. He was at Nevada continuously from 1976-2012 as a coach and athletic director.

Another poor shooting night might have put an end to Nevada’s basketball season. The Wolf Pack lost to Colorado State, 67-59, Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West tournament, dropping to 17-16 on the season after failing to reach the semifinals of the conference tournament for the fourth straight season. Nevada shot 36 percent from the field against the Rams, including just 19.2 percent (5-for-26) from the 3-point line. The Pack was also outrebounded, 36-31.

The Nevada athletics department rolled the dice in 1992 and said, “We want to play big-time football.”At the time, the decision seemed to be a logical next step in the Wolf Pack’s progression from obscure Division II independent, to joining the Big Sky, to eventually becoming a national power at the FCS (formerly I-AA) level. So, joining the Big West for the 1992 season just seemed like another rung on the ladder.

Nevada certainly isn’t taking the easy way out in its first season under new football coach Jeff Choate. The Wolf Pack will open on its earliest date ever, play 13 regular-season games, face 10 bowl teams from last season and play against each of the top five finishers in the Mountain West’s preseason poll. And all of that comes on the heels of two straight 2-10 finishes under since-fired coach Ken Wilson.

The song remains the same for everyone not in the SEC — and that clearly includes softball, too. Mid- and low-majors across the country need to be basically perfect to have any shot at getting in; meanwhile, SEC teams get endless credit simply for playing each other.

So proud of @Nevada_Softball and what we were able to accomplish in year 1: 41-14 and a CHAMPIONSHIP. Crushed to see the same old, same old and the lack of representation of Mid-Majors schools. The future is bright and we’re ready to leave no doubt. Go Packsters 🐺🏆
