Posted 7/4/25 With Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor all but certain, unions and labor leaders are taking stock of what to many marks a repudiation of establishment candidates, not least among them Andrew Cuomo, and even a long-awaited makeover of the party. Most of the city unions that traditionally support Democrats endorsed the former governor.

FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker went off-script during his remarks at a graduation ceremony for firefighter cadets last month. Eschewing his prepared speech, Tucker explained to the 82 fire cadets and their families why none of them would be joining the next scheduled class of probationary firefighters and would instead spend the next months in the FDNY EMS academy.

Workers across a dozen United Auto Workers’ bargaining units have spent years quietly working to align their contract expiration dates to June 30, hoping the union could exert maximum pressure on both management and the lawmakers who fund legal services in New York City.

Posted 6/27/25 The owner of a 308-unit rental building in Midtown Manhattan reached a $650,000 settlement with New York City Comptroller Brad Lander over violations of prevailing wage laws, Lander’s office announced this week. The building owner, 160 Madison Ave LLC, underpaid 15 workers from March 2019 to February 2021, the second time that the building owners had been caught skirting the law, the comptroller’s office said.
