Dan Osborn’s performance this month was a bright spot in an otherwise bleak election cycle for progressives. Although he ultimately lost, the independent US Senate candidate outperformed Kamala Harris in Nebraska by 14 percentage points while running an assertively anti-establishment, pro-union platform. His formula was simple: connect with people about their economic problems, tell them who to blame for them, and tell them what he would do about it.

This after the “most pro-union president” of our lifetimes provided a tight labor market and a friendly organizing environment for union activists. The Democrats, facing down a wave of inflation, failed even to match their vote totals from 2020.

Before the election it was clear that Kamala Harris’s closing message was not landing with working-class voters. The Center for Working Class Politics (CWCP) sounded the alarm that the Democrats could be heading for a disaster. And last Tuesday, disaster struck. Harris lost badly. She resoundingly lost the electoral college (226 to 312 as of publication), and she lost the critical blue-wall states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

It will be months before we can get a more definitive look at what happened in 2024 in terms of demographic trends, but one thing is clear: Kamala Harris performed poorly among working-class voters. Looking at the best preliminary data, AP Votecast indicates that the Democrats’ share of the overall working class (non-college) vote shrunk from 47 percent in 2020 to 43 percent in this election.

On paper, Simone Collins, candidate for state representative in Pennsylvania, seems like a typical Republican. She’s a mother of four and, by her own account, an adoring wife. In line with mainstream conservatives, she seeks to “supercharge school choice,” lower taxes, and use AI to “eliminate bureaucratic bloat.” But in one crucial regard, Collins is very different. She’s an atheist. A Pennsylvania Republican running openly as a nonbeliever would have been unthinkable just a decade ago.

Joseph Heath, a distinguished academic philosopher from Canada, has now published two essays proclaiming and detailing the death of Marxism. His first essay, “John Rawls and the Death of Western Marxism” is stimulating and engaging. But while Heath knows a good many things about Marx and Marxism, he writes as if he knows the first and last things about them (he’s not alone in this; we can only assume it is an occupational tendency).
