It’s impossible to overstate how great Alex Graham’s comics are. I’m certainly not the first person to call her one of the best cartoonists working today, but it bears repeating. Graham designs some of the most visually striking characters around and throws them into emotionally complex, unpredictable situations. Madi showed me Graham’s Cosmic Being years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

When I was doing the art for MACHINE DETECTIVE: A FRIENDLY WAGER: I made myself a few cheat sheets like this with some of my old collages, photos, and Nick's prints at different sizes so I could work with the same characters, textures and patterns from a few different perspectives. Sometimes I think that book would look even better if I had been more rigorous about this process/approach. Other days, I feel like using sheets like this at all was sort of cheating.

Happy Sunday! I'm sharing some old, colorful one-page comics that I'm quite fond of, but that might not see print for a while because color is expensive. Though, who knows... Could be fun to do a little small run of paintings and color work. I'd just have to charge an arm and a leg for it. Yesterday was Madi's birthday. A friend and I cooked her breakfast, I gave her a murder mystery and some Tezuka books, and had some friends meet us at a restaurant to surprise her.
