We’re a world away from one of the earliest shows Vybz Kartel played in Brooklyn. If you search hard enough, there’s footage of Kartel, slender and confident, performing on February 15, 2005, at a venue called The Rock. He’s dressed in a white suit, matching loafers, and a pastel pink undershirt that match his blinding, swaggering delivery.

Though hip-hop is 52 years old now, its fans are still getting used to the idea of an Old Rapper. There was a time when, if you hadn’t gotten your big break by 30, people expected you to wrap it up and clock in at UPS. But today, you don’t have to look far to find examples of elder stars. Golden-age pioneers like Big Daddy Kane (56) and Missy Elliott (53) have settled into the nostalgia circuit, while millennial icons like 50 Cent (49), Nelly (50), and Bow Wow (38) are starting to join them.

The retrofuturism movement raises a simple question: What if the gap between yesterday and tomorrow was smaller? Blurring the lines between eras is a way to create new worlds, fragments of time recontextualizing each other. Think of The Incredibles, Brad Bird’s 2004 animated superhero movie, which imagined a future of flying cars and laser beams done up in a ‘60s art-deco style, or artists like Stevie Wonder and Parliament-Funkadelic using the vocoder to give their voices a robotic edge.
