As we enter a new era of US imperialism, it is to be expected that we will have to embrace some annoying aspects of American life. Some are already here, of course, including the newfangled habit of aggressive tipping (for some bizarre reason, the Chiltern Fire House now asks you to tip your waitress twice); the hospitality industry’s inversion of service (“I can do that for you,” they say, as though they’re doing you a massive favour); and the worst of the lot, the scheduled phone call.

This week sees the denouement of The London Standard’s Christmas campaign, as our Winter Appeal races past £3 million — and gets the support of Mayor Sadiq Khan. He has called on Londoners to “dig deep” as This Day Foundation pledges an extra £755,000. The Winter Appeal, A Place to Call Home, organised in partnership with Comic Relief, is seeking to help fund organisations that support asylum seekers and people experiencing homelessness.

Back in the Eighties, suits were so wide that even the shoulder pads had shoulder pads. Suits back then were boxy, square, and designed to make you look like a quarterback, a bouncer or a tank. So it was very difficult to wear one unless you were also shaped like a quarterback, a bouncer or a tank. If, like me, you were tall and skinny, wearing an off-the-peg suit made you look as though someone had thrown a sheet over a beanpole. Or a javelin.

Over the years, The Standard has been as renowned for its campaigns as its journalism. This Christmas we are partnering with Comic Relief to help two of London’s most disadvantaged groups, refugees and the homeless. The appeal is one of our most ambitious, although we have been helped enormously as Comic Relief has already pledged £500,000. We are seeking to challenge false stereotypes and will be lobbying the Government for a more compassionate approach, and legislative change.
