1 Introduction Like other vertebrates, shark skin consists of a superficial epidermis that sits atop a dermis (Elliott 2011; Meyer and Seegers 2012). Unlike other vertebrates, sharks have mineralized denticles that are rooted in the dermis, and these denticles grow through the epidermis to create an overlapping covering of mineralized scales on the surface of sharks.
