It was another jam-packed Arcata Bay Oyster Festival in Arcata on Saturday with attendees soaking in the sunshine and seafood at the Arcata Plaza 35 years after the first Arcata Bay Oyster Festival took place back in 1990. There were all the sights and activities locals have come to expect, and love, from Oyster Fest, with live music, friendly chatter and all the oysters one could dream about.

H-DNL softball league awards were announced this week with Del Norte senior Shay Nolan and South Fork’s sophomore Mackenzie Coleman bringing home the MVP awards for the Big 5 and Little 4. The Del Norte Warriors won their third straight Big 5 league title and after Carlee Harper won the league MVP in 2024, it was the Warriors’ senior pitcher Shay Nolan who took home the 2025 MVP award.

After a one-year hiatus from the top of the Little 4 baseball standings, the St. Bernard’s Crusaders returned to the top of the league standings, going 10-2 in league play with junior Luke Brunton leading the way and earning the 2025 Little 4 MVP award. Brunton earned the award for his work both at the plate and on the mound. The junior led St. Bernard’s with 56.1 innings on the mound where he earned a 7-2 record with a 1.49 earned run average and striking out 67 batters.

It didn’t come as a total surprise that Del Norte’s Preston Daniels took home the MVP award for the Big 5 after dominating on the mound all spring. In fact, Daniels even had an “MVP” chain at the Warriors’ league-clinching win against Eureka last month. Daniels highlighted this year’s Big 5 baseball All-League team, one of five Del Norte All-League players, with the Big 5 having plenty of talent up-and-down the league.

The Crabs now nine games into the 2025 Humboldt Crabs season and the loss column remains untouched with the Crabs improving to 9-0 following a two-game sweep against the Stockton Pearls. It’s not like the Crabs are just steamrolling their opponents, as Humboldt celebrated their second walk-off win of the season Wednesday night at Arcata Ball Park. The Crabs held a 4-3 lead entering the ninth inning before the Pearls jumped in front as they scored two runs off of Humboldt reliever Kayden Kohlberg.

Since Cal Poly Humboldt’s rowing team’s excellent showing at the NCAA Division II National Championships in New Jersey late last month, the team has been raking in the awards with a pair of ‘Jacks rowers being named All-Americans last week. Seniors Emily Marsolais and Kealey Scott were both named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association’s (CRCA) First Team All-American.

It’s been a chillier start to June in the North Coast than what we’ve seen in recent years and that’s not expected to change much for the rest of this week along the coast with wind and cloud coverage delivering us a brisk beginning of June. “I’m not seeing anything really jump out to me that says it’s going to warm up too much on the coast,” Matthew Kidwell, a meteorologist at the Eureka National Weather Service office said of this week’s forecast.

The additions continue to roll in for the Cal Poly Humboldt women’s basketball team this offseason, with the ‘Jacks having added 11 players to the program since their season ended in early March. Humboldt went just 9-19 (five games back of a CCAA Tournament appearance) this past season with the ‘Jacks offense ranking 11th of 12 teams in the CCAA. The ‘Jacks began the recruiting season by landing guards Sienna Cherwin, Shade Satica and Kya Kanoho, but Humboldt didn’t stop there.
