Photo by Terence Lewis/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Nebraska will have nine current and future Husker wrestlers competing this weekend at the U20 and U23 Freestyle World Team Trials in Geneva, Ohio. The freestyle portion of the tournaments will start on Saturday, May 31 and will conclude on Sunday, June 1. Nebraska will have two guys in the U20 field and seven more in the U23 tournament. The winners will represent Team USA at their age-level world championships this fall.

Columbus Wrestling on Facebook A two-time Class A State Champion for the Discoverers, Petersen won his first title as a sophomore at 138 pounds over two-time champ Miles Anderson of Millard South (see below) — he went 47-6 that year.

Photo by Shane Bevel/NCAA Photos via Getty Images Nebraska sent six wrestlers to the Senior-level World Team Trials this weekend — three returned with hardware but none of them earned a bid to Final X. Senior-to-be Brock Hardy was the closest to earning one as he made it to the 65 kg final, while both Ridge Lovett and Christian Lance placed. Outside of 2023, this will be the first year since 2011 that a former Husker wasn’t on Team USA’s Senior World or Olympic Team.

Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images Four former Huskers and two current wrestlers have registered for the World Team Trials next weekend on May 16-17 in Louisville, Ky. The winners of those brackets will earn a spot at Final X — a best-of-three series to determine who will represent Team USA at the Senior World Championships. Essentially, the World Championships are the Olympics in non-Olympic years — although there are 10 weight classes at Worlds instead of six.

The Senior-level competition concluded on Saturday with all four Nebraska Wrestling Training Center athletes qualifying for the World Team Trials at the end of May, but none of them were able to punch their ticket to Final X.
