North Korea relaunched its second Choe Hyon-class guided-missile destroyer at Rajin Shipyard, located on the northeast coast of North Korea on Thursday. The launch of the 5,000-ton Kang Kon (52) follows a failed launch on May 21 at the Chongjin Shipyard that capsized the ship. North Korea subsequently raised the ship and towed it to Rajin Shipyard, which lies around 50 miles north of Chongjin Shipyard.

Japan reached out to China, expressing concern the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy J-15 fighters that came within 50 meters of a Japanese surveillance aircraft, Japan Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said Friday. The close encounter, which saw a fighter from aircraft carrier CNS Shandong (17) carry out an unusual maneuver against a JMSDF P-3C Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft over the Philippine Sea last weekend, could lead to an accidental collision, Nakatani said in a Friday press conference.

Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy J-15 fighters came within 50 meters of a Japanese surveillance aircraft in what officials have called an “unusual maneuver,” announced this week. The fighter from aircraft carrier CNS Shandong (17) carried out the unusual maneuvers against Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force P-3C Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) over the Philippine Sea last weekend.

Amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock (LSD-45) returned to San Diego on June 5, wrapping up a three-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific and being so far the only West Coast-based amphibious ship to deploy to the region this year. In other developments, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG) continues to carry out routine operations in the South China Sea and the U.S and Singapore kicked off joint naval drills in Guam on Saturday.

Two Chinese aircraft carrier strike groups have simultaneously deployed to the Western Pacific – a first for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), Japanese officials said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73) left its homeport in Japan on Tuesday for carrier air wing qualifications.
