It's a classic movie trope for the archvillain to kill trusted henchmen near the end as things go wrong. Trump shook things up by targeting allies before launching his plans.

The Trump Administration would have a far stronger hand against China if it had included allies Japan, South Korea, the EU and others on its side of the table instead of imposing sky high tariffs on them. A major miscalculation.
