Meridian Township residents will vote on a funding plan in August for a new senior, community center

The Meridian Township Board has approved a funding plan for a new senior and community center, which will be on voters’ ballots during the August election. The board voted Thursday on the plan, choosing from five different proposals. If approved, the plan will mean a .9051 millage increase to property taxes which will raise residents’ property taxes by 90 cents on each thousand dollars of property value.

Constitution Hall in Lansing is now the Deborah A. Stabenow Building. In a ceremony on Wednesday making the name change official, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called it a tribute to former U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow’s commitment to public service. “She has served as a trailblazer and an inspiration to many,” Whitmer said.

The Ingham County Health Department is moving the Willow Community Health Center from its current Lansing location on South Pennsylvania Avenue. Beginning June 23, it will operate out of a space in the Forest Community Health Center on South Cedar Street. Ingham County Medical Health Officer Dr. Nike Shoyinka says there are several reasons for the move, including budgetary issues. “That space that we are using is larger than we need right now,” Shoyinka said.

Former Michigan State University football coach Mel Tucker has responded to a defamation lawsuit filed by a sexual assault prevention advocate. In that response, Tucker says his relationship with sexual assault prevention advocate Brenda Tracy was consensual. Tucker was fired in 2023, after the school determined he had violated the school's sexual harassment policy.

The Trump administration’s cutting of funding for AmeriCorps is affecting organizations that serve mid-Michigan residents. The federal program provides grants to programs in all 50 states, providing around 200,000 corps members with living stipends and money for education in exchange for their work at community-based organizations. Lansing’s Allen Neighborhood Center has lost four AmeriCorps members.
