PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. – Smoking materials is listed as the cause of a fire at a Peoria Heights residence. Firefighters were dispatched to the house in the 5000 block of N. Best Street at 6:18 a.m. Saturday on a report of a porch and roof on fire. They arrived to find smoke coming from the attic of the single-family one story residence and fire on the porch.

Peoria police are investigating an early morning shooting in South Peoria. Police say it appears a group of people had gathered in the 600 block of South Western at 5:04 a.m. Saturday, when a Shot Spotter alert indicated seven rounds were fired. Officers arrived to find an adult male down in the area of Western and Howett. The victim was taken to a local hospital where his condition is only described as stable. There is no suspect information.

Peoria police officers are investigating a report of shots fired in South Peoria. Officers were dispatched to area of Howett and Western around 5:05 a.m. Saturday. Few details are available, but scanner traffic indicated police were marking off a crime scene a parking lot in the area. Western Avenue was closed to traffic between Lincoln and Howett.

PEORIA, Ill. – Family, classmates, teachers, mentors, and the community gathered to remember young Torres Lamar Johnson. The ten-year-old boy was fatally shot Sept. 29 inside of Cityscape Apartments on Peoria’s south side. 25 News reports a Johnson’s funeral was held Friday at Sovereign Grace Missional Baptist Church. Diane Hines, Johnson’s music teacher at Elise Ford Allen Academy, said he expressed interest in the choir, but never got an opportunity to join due to scheduling.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois State University has agreed to spend $17.5 million purchasing the old General Electric Road building in Bloomington from insurance company Country Financial. 25 News reports ISU plans to make this the home of their new College of Engineering. The goal is to have students taking a class there in 2025, with a full move-in planned for 2026. The original plan was to renovate two buildings on campus.

(Reuters) – Boeing will cut 17,000 jobs — 10% of its global workforce — delay first deliveries of its 777X jet by a year and record $5 billion in losses in the third quarter, as the U.S. planemaker continues to spiral during a month-long strike. CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a message to employees that the significant downsizing is necessary “to align with our financial reality” after an ongoing strike by 33,000 U.S. West Coast workers halted production of its 737 MAX, 767 and 777 jets.
