Plymouth Argyle forward Mustapha Bundu suffered a first-half injury as he captained Sierra Leone to a 3-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau in the World Cup Qualifiers, scoring a goal himself before having to be taken off. Bundu took the armband in the Group A encounter, which took place in neighbouring Liberia. Sierra Leone are rebuilding their national stadium in Freetown so are temporarily playing their home matches at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.

In the early hours of Saturday September 6 1924, the SS Ettrick left Hotwells, bound for Belfast and then Glasgow. A twin-screw steamer of 965 tons, the Ettrick was 230ft long and 22ft in the beam had been built in 1894 for the Glasgow shipping firm of Sloan & Sons in 1894. She was carrying a mixed cargo of Bristol manufactures, including chocolate, cigarettes, bottled cider, boots and shoes, cloth and other items as diverse as flour and table cutlery.

In around 1871 or 1872, the story goes, a local doctor planted seven firs in honour of his seven daughters. We have yet to come across any evidence for this, though there’s no good reason to disbelieve it. They were originally a ring of six, with the seventh in the middle, though this was felled in the early 20th century. One was lost in a storm in 1990 and two more were removed in 2000 when it was found they were infected by honey fungus.

Sir Robert Buckland says the Conservatives are facing "Armageddon" as he rounded on some party colleagues following the loss of his Swindon South seat. The veteran Tory accused the likes of Suella Braverman of putting personal agenda ahead of the party in an interview with the BBC.
