It has been a privilege to have test-driven some of the greatest new cars of modern times on your behalf at home and abroad and to have done so in the company of some great people. Despite the fact that I have test-driven hundreds of sorts – from a Model T to a Rolls-Royce – I am gripped by the awesome concept and technological ingenuity involved in the myriad elements that make up a car. That is good news for motorists waiting to get into a less expensive battery electric vehicle (BEV). Already there are a few smaller BEVs on the Irish market, but Hyundai Ireland managing director Stephen Gleeson believes the proposal by the European Commission will speed up the flow of such cars – costing €18,000 to €20,000 over the next few years. The commission is planning to give carmakers three years instead of one to meet new emissions targets.
