Some came from the factory to help the engine compartment breathe. Others were meticulously stamped into panels by hot rodders looking for a custom look. Still others originated as aftermarket solutions with a bit of style to help keep interiors a little cooler. Louvers can be found on cars of all ages for all different reasons, and while most look pretty sweet, some capture our hearts more than others.

Writ large, the collector car market continues to slow—March saw indicators that pushed it to levels not seen since before the pandemic. That said, some models continue to appreciate. The first quarter of the year provides ample sales data to help get a bead on the trajectories of the cars covered in the Hagerty Price Guide. Here are some of the most notable moves (measured by average value increase across all four condition ratings) we’ve observed in our latest update.

At this year’s Mecum Glendale auction, a rather unique second-gen Corvette crossed the block. Overused though the u-word might be, this ’65 indeed has a few factors that set it apart. Previously owned by Robert Downey, Jr and subsequently converted to an EV powertrain as part of his show, Downey’s Dream Cars, this is the first EV-swapped C2 (1963-67) Corvette we’ve seen at public auction.

Whether it was due to early exposure or the fact that they’ve just had good taste from the get-go (looking at you, Sajeev), some of my colleagues have appreciated sedans for a long time. Others, like yours truly, took a while to come around to them.

Your toolkit needs to strike a fine balance between luggable and overkill. Just about every gearhead has been to a pull-a-part junkyard. The (mostly) American phenomenon of a self-service automotive dismantler has been around for generations, and they generally all look the same: rows and rows of decrepit donor cars begging to provide you with that one part you absolutely need to complete a restoration, get your car back on the road, or upgrade it to way cooler spec. Junkyards can be intimidating.

It is true. We automotive journalists are rightfully guilty of living in a dream world that most motorists could never even imagine. But sometimes one of us enjoys popping this academic Bubble of Automobilia (as it were), and this time it was our own Kyle Smith who asked something utterly reasonable to his co-workers:What’s the best utility vehicle for 95% of our needs? I was excited to see how we answered this one and immediately tried to justify something like a Ford Raptor.

The collector-car market may have peaked in 2022, but its momentum continued, bolstering the popularity of public auctions, especially online ones, for years. It’s only now, about 30 months later, that the stratospheric growth of online auction listings has tapered, which illustrates a shift in seller behavior. The below data suggest that auction markets have begun to find their level in terms of capacity after a period of dramatic change, influenced by the pandemic and a new marketplace medium.

Much as I gravitate toward the aggressive, chiseled visage of a C7 Corvette or the stoic, utilitarian look of a Scout II, I can’t help but crack a smile when I see a cute little car. Pint-sized proportions and designs that look like they were penned for a kid’s book will get me every time. Seems like the rest of the staff on the Hagerty Mediateam fall into the same camp—even Sajeev, though he did insist on picking a car with rectangular headlamps because brutalism, of course.

After a drawn-out effort with plenty of stops and starts, Cadillac has cleared the final hurdle between it and the F1 grid. The internet’s adoring chorus for all things Miata suggests that Miata has always been the answer. But when Mazda introduced the third-generation (NC) MX-5 in 2006, many among the Miata faithful couldn’t help but furrow their brows and wonder if that was still the case. Bigger in almost every way, and without the classically styled lines of the early cars, the NC sent skeptics to the forums with concerns over whether the new car stayed true to the Miata’s ethos of pure driving enjoyment.
