ASTANA – Astana Opera unveiled a new edition of “Aisulu” comic opera on Nov. 29, in honor of the 100th anniversary of its composer, the renowned Kazakh musician Sydyq Mukhamedzhanov. Staged in 1972, “Aisulu” became the first Kazakh comic opera with a modern plot. It follows Serke, a young man from a village, as his journey to the city intertwines with the story about an inspiring young woman Aisulu, leading to romantic misadventures, playful tricks, and a joyful celebration of love in the village.

ASTANA — The Naz State Dance Theater celebrated its 25th anniversary with the premiere of “Aldar Kose,” a choreographic performance that beautifully combines traditional Kazakh dance with contemporary movement, at Erkegali Rahmadiyev State Academic Philharmonic on Nov. 22. Aldar Kose, one of Kazakhstan’s most beloved folk characters, is often compared to Robin Hood.

ASTANA – Last weekend, Kazakhstan’s Turan ethno-folk ensemble took the stage of the Qazaq Concert to perform a traditional music set, showcasing the variety and richness of Kazakh and Turkic nations’ instruments in Astana. After wowing foreign audiences in 2023 with a world tour, Kazakh ethno group Turan returned to Astana with a lecture-concert. Established in 2008, the ensemble has given more than 3,000 concerts in 122 cities of the world.

ASTANA – Kazakhstan marks 100 years since the birth of a prolific Kazakh writer for children, Berdibek Sokpakbaev, whose humorous and kind stories engaged children and adults alike. He was best known for the highly regarded and popular “My Name is Kozha” novel, which was adapted for film in 1963. Sokpakbaev is considered a classic of Kazakh children’s literature, but his books are loved by readers of all ages and generations.
