Companies owned by individuals with political connections and some entrepreneurs have concessions near heavily mined riverbanks despite former President Akufo-Addo’s directives that mining companies maintain a 100-meter distance from water bodies. The Fourth Estate’s investigations show that these companies lack permits from regulatory authorities including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Water Resources Commission.
